PLASMA TELEVISIONS Unrivaled Pic

REAR PROJECTION TELEVISIONS
Big Performance at Wallet Friendly Prices

By: Shannon Noce, Staff Writer

With new emerging technologies, rear projection TVs remain a strong competitor in the TV arena.  It’s now possible to get a big screen without putting up with a bulky set, while still enjoying the other benefits of rear projection televisions. These televisions offer a lot of performance at a price that won’t empty your wallet.

TYPES OF REAR PROJECTION TVs:                                                  [ Top ]

CRT: With Rear Projection CRTs, 3 cathode ray tubes project red, green, and blue onto the screen.  While these TVs do not offer wide viewing angles, the picture when viewing them head on is excellent.  These televisions are affordable and provide excellent image quality.

LCD:
Slimmer and lighter than CRTs, rear projection LCDs are a very popular choice among those looking for a new television. With a rear projection LCD, you get a brighter picture and better color quality than a CRT, as a light source shines though 3 LCD panels to form the image. You also get the widest viewing angles of all the types of rear projection television choices.

HD-ILA:
Exclusively from JVC, HD-ILA televisions are powered by the same D-ILA (Direct-drive Image Light Amplifier) 3-chip design found in professional video projectors. 3 chips mean that you can expect outstanding resolution, high definition, and an all around impressive picture.

DLP:
The obvious advantage when choosing a rear projection DLP is the color quality.  Brighter images with more color contrast are made possible thanks to revolutionary technology from Texas Instruments.  Tiny mirrors tilt to reflect or block light, forming the image.  Revolutionary and popular, DLPs provide outstanding life-like images.

LCoS:
A new type of LCD technology, LCoS rear projection TVs work as light is directed through a series of polarizers and is then magnified and projected onto the screen.  You won’t get the best blacks with this type of rear projection, but you will get an excellent picture from a TV with a stylish and slim profile.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A
 REAR PROJECTION
TV:                                                                               [ Top ]

Black level: The different types of rear projection TVs offer varying degrees of performance when it comes to black level.  DLPs generally provide the best blacks.

Viewing Angle:  The best way to see how good a TV’s viewing angles are is to go see it for yourself at your nearest Sixth Avenue Electronics retail store. You’ll get better viewing angles from an LCD, DLP or LCos, but make sure the particular model you are considering doesn’t have a screen with a lot of glare.

Connections:  As with any TV, its great picture is meaningless if it’s not displaying what you want to see. Make a list of the components you’ll want to connect and check for the appropriate connections.  Keep in mind that if you are thinking about getting an HD-DVD player or a Blu-ray disc player, you will need an HDMI connection.
